A genuine variegated clone of a rare or extinct Atlantic Forest species would require credible provenance and expert identification, not just resemblance to a climbing philodendron. For pet poisoning, however, the immediate treatment category is still clear: a chewed philodendron-type aroid with drooling and mouth pain should be managed as an insoluble calcium oxalate exposure while exact identification is sorted out.

The cat received supportive gastrointestinal and hepatic treatment. Jaundice resolved, liver values gradually normalized, and complete recovery was documented by day 55.

The report did not identify the plant to species or confirm direct hepatotoxicity. Ultrasound, biopsy, and several additional diagnostic investigations were not performed. The authors concluded that the presentation was unlikely to be explained directly by the plant’s established toxicity and that prolonged anorexia may have triggered secondary hepatic lipidosis.

This case is useful because it shows that a cat refusing food after oral irritation may develop a serious secondary problem. It does not establish permanent liver damage as a predictable effect of P. imbe or other philodendrons. The practical rule is to take feline anorexia seriously without rewriting philodendron toxicology as a proven direct liver-poison syndrome.

Comparative Feline Feeding Evidence

An earlier toxicologic assessment exposed cats orally to minced leaves of Heartleaf Philodendron, identified in older usage as Philodendron oxycardium and now generally associated with Philodendron hederaceum, at reported quantities up to 9.1 grams per kilogram. Important Differential Diagnoses

Other calcium oxalate aroids include Monstera, Rhaphidophora, Scindapsus, pothos, peace lily, calla lily, Dieffenbachia, Syngonium, Caladium, Alocasia, Colocasia, Anthurium, jack-in-the-pulpit, and related houseplants. They can create very similar drooling, mouth pain, swelling, and vomiting.

Caustic cleaners, batteries, electrical burns, insect stings, caterpillar hairs, bones, sticks, fishhooks, dental disease, oral ulcers, and esophageal foreign bodies can also cause sudden drooling, gagging, mouth pain, and difficulty swallowing.
