Grooming Salon Considerations

There is no one service that seems to intimidate potential pet care business owners as much as the thought of offering dog or cat grooming; the latter being a bit more of an adventure. Perhaps this is due to a lack of understanding or an unrealistic fear as to what "grooming" actually is. Like any successful endeavor, the most important step is planning, as the quality of any finished product is directly proportionate to the amount of preparation that was put into its creation. Hopefully, prior to opening your pet care facility you left adequate room for expansion or in the event you are still scouting a location this is something that you will need to give serious thought to.

The first step to offering grooming in an existing facility or deciding whether or not a proposed location will allow you to offer grooming in such a fashion as it fits in with the overall layout and design of your facility is to determine exactly where you would like the grooming salon to be located. It is my recommendation that you select a location within the facility that allows customers to see the dogs being worked on. In this business (speaking of the pet care business in general) transparency is an attribute that customers appreciate. Customers like the ability to see that their dog is being groomed in a clean, safe and modern environment. It makes them feel at ease, it makes them feel more comfortable knowing that their dog is not being groomed in some hidden dungeon within the bowels of your facility.

Additionally having the grooming room in an area where it is viewable, but not accessible to customers will save you time. When the grooming room or salon is out of sight, many potential grooming customers will ask to see or take a tour of where their dog will be groomed prior to leaving their dog with you. It is also not uncommon for some potential grooming customers to flat out leave the facility when they realize that their dog will be groomed in an area that is not viewable by the public. If your grooming shop runs as most do, by appointment, this now gone and probably won’t come back customer just cost you an unfilled appointment slot. Time that you had reserved just for them and for which you were expecting to generate revenue is now wasted.
