FOR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE OF DUTIES AS A COMPETITOR ON THE INTRAMURAL SHOOTING TEAM, MARINE WING SUPPORT SQUADRON 172, MARINE WING SUPPORT GROUP 17, 1ST MARINE AIRCRAFT WING, III MARINE EXPEDITIONARY FORCE, MARINE FORCES PACIFIC FROM 5 JANUARY TO 17 JANUARY 1998. HE ASSISTED IN PREPARING SHOOTING RELAYS ON A DAILY BASIS AND COACHING HIS FELLOW MARINES ON THE TEAM. SIMULATANEOUSLY HE SHOT AN AGGREGATE 447 OUT OF A POSSIBLE 600 POINTS DURING INDIVIDUAL PISTOL COMPETITION AT THE FAR EAST INTRAMURAL MATCH. HE PLACED TWENTY-FIFTH OUT OF 116 COMPETITORS IN THE INDIVIDUAL MATCH AND WAS THE THRID HIGHEST PISTOL SHOOTER ON THE TEAM. HIS PERFORMANCE EARNED HIM A PLACE ON THE MARINE WING SUPPORT SQUARON 172 PISTOL COMPETITION TEAM. CORPORAL WITHERILL'S OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE REFELECTED GREAT CREDIT UPON HIMSELF AND WERE IN KEEPING WITH THE HIGHEST TRADITIONS OF THE MARINE CORPS AND THE UNITED STATES NAVAL SERVICE.
