Is the underground part a bulb or a rhizome?

It is more accurately a rhizome. Calla lilies are often sold casually as bulbs, but Zantedeschia aethiopica grows from a thick, fleshy, branching underground stem. Rhizome pieces can remain irritating, may regrow if left in soil, and can be attractive to dogs, pigs, goats, rabbits, and other animals that chew roots or fleshy plant material.

A dog may dig up and chew a thick rhizome for longer than it would chew a leaf edge.
