Toxin: Methylxanthines
Symptoms: vomiting, panting, hyperactivity, diarrhea, ataxia, muscle tremors, irregular heart beat, increased or decreased heart rate, hyperthermia, seizures, coma and death.
Additional Information: Chocolate contains theobromine. A stimulant that is found naturally in the cocoa bean, theobromine will increase urination and affect the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While the specific amount necessary to kill a dog will vary by the type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs. Caffeine can be found in coffee, tea and other caffeinated products and stimulants.
